The RAW file format is a graphic format in which you can save the image that your digital camera (mirrorless or SLR that it is) has just captured. When you shoot with a compact camera, a bridge camera or with your smartphone, the files you save and then watch on your computer are of a certain well-defined type: the JPG format (or .jpeg file). You can consider it as a "standard" comfortable and recognized by everyone to allow you to see images on any device and it is an image file already post-produced and optimized by your digital camera so that it is "nice to see" immediately. The RAW file is a picture format, just like the JPG, but it gives you many opportunities and advantages in post-production; unlike the JPG format it stores all the data that the sensor registered, without making any changes to it. The exporting process of RAW files to more common formats (TIFF, PPM) can be done with the powerful tool dcRaw (author: Dave Coffin), who is a shell program that process entire series of RAW images with several option available. In order to improve the usability of that program, this GUI has been made. This program makes RAW files processing much simplest for more users (pleasant as silk - this explain the name of this program).
